Agrology, the Agricultural and Environmental Profession
The Alberta Institute of Agrologists is the regulatory body for the practice of agrology in Alberta. The Profession of Agrology is diverse and evolving. It focuses on science as it applies directly or indirectly to the management of biophysical resources, food production systems, food security and safety, and environmental quality. There are four Agrology sectors: Life Sciences, Environment, Agriculture and Food with 42 practice areas.
The Alberta Institute of Agrologists (AIA) is responsible for ensuring the public interest is protected as it relates to the practice of agrology in the Province of Alberta. AIA’s authority stems from the 2007 Agrology Profession Act and the associated Agrology Profession Regulations. Mandatory registration, is a new requirement with the Institute. Qualified individuals who hold degrees or diplomas in agricultural or environmental sciences must register and obtain a “practice permit” with the profession if they practice agrology (Section 1(v) of the APA) and offer professional services. The public has access to a “fair and responsive complaint process” to address incompetent or unethical practice by registered agrology professionals. Those who are qualified to practice Agrology and who do so without license are in contravention of the Agrology Profession Act and may be guilty of an offence under the Act.
