AIA Council

The affairs of the Institute are directed by a governing Council. The purpose of the Council, on behalf of the people of Alberta, is to see to it that the Alberta Institute of Agrologists achieves appropriate results for the appropriate people at an appropriate cost, and avoids unacceptable actions and situations. AIA Council operates following the principles of Policy Governance®. Using this system, Council is enabled to focus on the task of governing while delegating the work of achieving outcomes to the CEO.

Council operates according to four policy documents:

  • Ends Policies
  • Governance Process
  • Executive Limitations
  • Council-CEO Relationship

The Council currently consists of seven Professional Agrologists, two Registered Technologist in Agrology, and three public members. Councilors and public members serve for three year terms. Public members are appointed by the Alberta government. Council members (excluding public members) are elected by AIA registered members from across the province. The Council Chair and Vice-Chair are elected annually from among the AIA members on Council.

2011 Council Nominations

Council elections

Elections are underway for the Council representative for the Northern Region. Three candidates have been nominated: Anthony Anyia, PAg, Twyla Jones, PAg, and Sonja Raven, PAg. The election is being conducted by mail, and will close Feb. 15.

Council members for two other designated seats were elected by acclamation. They are Gerald Ontkean, PAg, presententing Southern Alberta, and Ken Bax, RTAg, filling the RTAg seat.
